The inscription at the bottom reads:
'To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Freda Pauline Cannell, the devoted wife of the Rev W.R. Cannell and "Our Own Missionary" who was accidentally burnt to death at Kweilin, China on the 29th June 1926'.
Rev W.R. Cannell was a Curate at St James in the 1920's.
Kweilin is a place with a very small population in the province of Guangxi, in south central China.
On page 103 of the book “Weapons that Win” by E. F. E. Wigram, M.A. (a book that tells the C.M.S. story of the year 1930-1931), reference is made to Rev W.R. Cannell writing from the ‘Hunan Diocese and Mission’. Mention is also made that the “Kwangsi is a vast province 400 by 200 miles in extent and Kweilin is the one and only city in it where the C.M.S. has missionaries.”
