Elijah in the Wilderness

In this session on Old Testament Heroes of the Bible we are going to continue learning about Elijah. Last week we heard that Elijah held a contest to show everyone who the one true God really was. The contest was between the God of Israel and a statue called ‘Baal’ that a lot of the people worshipped. God sent fire from heaven to prove that he is the one and only true God and all the people saw God’s amazing power! Because of this, King Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, were angry and wanted to kill Elijah! Let’s watch the video to see what happened:

Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • What message did Jezebel send to Elijah?

  • Why did Elijah run away?

  • Where did Elijah go?

  • Who woke up Elijah?

  • What did the angel give to Elijah?

  • Why do you think God did this for him?

King Ahab and his wife Jezebel were angry that Elijah was encouraging people to stop worshipping Baal and start worshipping God instead. Jezebel was so angry that she sent a message to Elijah, saying, “May the gods strike me, or even kill me, if by this time tomorrow I haven’t killed you!” This was a very scary message and, when Elijah heard it, he ran away! He ran into the wilderness and was so exhausted from running for his life that he sat down and prayed that he would die! But God cared about Elijah and had good plans for him. Exhausted, Elijah fell asleep, but sometime later God sent an angel to wake him up! The angel gave Elijah some warm bread and water and told him to eat and drink. Elijah did what he was told and then fell back to sleep. Later, the angel woke him up a second time and told him to eat and drink more! God had plans for Elijah and he needed his strength to do them! God made sure Elijah rested and had plenty to eat and drink to be strong and healthy, because he loved and cared for him. God took care of Elijah when he needed it the most.

God takes care of us too! God provides us with food and water so that we can be strong and healthy. He also provides us with clothes to wear, homes to live in, families and friends to love and support us, and lots of other important things. He does this because he loves us! He cares about everything that happens to us and is always ready to help us. Let us remember to thank God for everything he gives us. What could you thank God for today?

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that you take care of us and give us what we need to be strong and healthy. Thank you that you love us so much and are always ready to help us. Please help us to remember to thank you each day for what you give us and to love you more and more. Amen.
