Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead

Over the past few sessions we have been learning about some of the amazing miracles that Jesus did during his time on earth to show that he is God. So far, we’ve learned that he made a blind man see; he healed 10 men suffering from leprosy; he fed over 5 thousand people with just a small packed lunch; and he walked on water! In this session we are going to hear about the time when Jesus did the ULTIMATE miracle – bringing someone back from the dead! Let’s watch the video to see what happened.

Time to Think and Pray

  • When Jesus arrived, how many days had Lazarus been dead?

  • Why do you think Jesus waited 2 days before going to see him?

  • Why did Jesus cry?

  • Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead by just calling out his name! What does this show about who Jesus is?

What an amazing thing Jesus did! Lazarus had been dead for 4 days! No-one thought anyone could do anything to help him now. But Jesus could! Jesus can do anything because He is God. He can tell sickness to go away, He can walk on water, and He can even tell death what to do! Jesus is amazing!

This started off as a sad story. Lazarus was a good friend of Jesus but when Jesus heard he was sick He didn’t go to help right away. Jesus waited until he knew Lazarus had died before he set off to help. This must have been very hard for Jesus to do because he loved his friends so much. But Jesus knew that this wouldn’t be the end of the story! He had something more important to teach everyone. If Jesus had gone straight away, Lazarus would have been healed and people wouldn’t have seen how powerful He really was. Lots of people visiting Martha and Mary believed in Jesus after that day because they saw Jesus bring Lazarus back to life!

Jesus said "I am the resurrection and the life!". Jesus wanted to teach us that if we believe and follow Him, when we die in this life, we can have a wonderful new life in heaven with Him. We can live for ever with Jesus and it’s going to be amazing!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that you are so powerful, that even death cannot stop you! Thank you that you are God and that nothing is impossible for you. Please help us to love and follow you every day so that one day we can go to live with you forever in heaven. Amen.
