Joseph in Egypt

In the last session we started learning about Joseph. Joseph was Israel’s favourite son and this made his brothers very angry! They sold Joseph to some traders and he was taken to Egypt to become a slave. In this session we’re going to learn about what happened to Joseph when he got to Egypt. Let’s watch the video to see what happened:

Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • How do you think Joseph felt when he was locked up for something he didn't do?

  • How do we know that Joseph loved God?

  • What special talent did God give to Joseph?

  • How can we be more like Joseph?

Joseph was taken to Egypt and started working in the house of an important man named Potiphar. Potiphar was one of Pharaoh’s officials. Joseph was a hard worker and did really well in Potiphar’s house. Potiphar’s wife tried to get Joseph to do bad things, but because Joseph loved God he refused to do them. This made Potiphar's wife very angry, so she lied to Potiphar and told him that Joseph had done the bad things she had wanted him to do! Potiphar believed his wife and put poor Joseph in prison. But God was with Joseph and while he was in prison he was very well-behaved, and soon he was put in charge of all the other prisoners. Now God had given Joseph a very special talent of being able to understand dreams. This meant that with God’s help, Joseph could help people understand what their dreams meant. While he was in prison, Joseph helped two other prisoners understand their dreams.

A little while later, Pharaoh had some very confusing dreams himself. He dreamed about 7 skinny cows that ate up 7 fat cows! He had heard that Joseph could help people understand dreams and called for Joseph to come to see him. With God's help Joseph explained to Pharaoh that his dreams were about something that would happen in the future. Pharaoh was so thankful to Joseph that he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt and Joseph helped to save a lot of people’s lives!

Even though bad things happened to Joseph, God was always with him and had good plans for him. If Joseph hadn't been sold by his brothers then he wouldn't have been able to help the Pharaoh or save people's lives as the ruler of Egypt.  If we love and obey God, he is always with us too, and has good plans for us. When we go through hard times, God will never leave us. He will take care of us as He loves us so much!

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that you are always with us and have good plans for us, even when we go through hard times. Please help us to love and trust in you every day of our lives. Amen
