Paul and Lydia

In the last session we heard about Saul and how he changed completely when he met Jesus and decided to follow Him. He changed his name to Paul and went everywhere telling people about the Lord. In today’s story he meets an important person named Lydia. Let’s watch the video and see what happened:

Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • What is your favourite colour?
  • What do you think Lydia’s favourite colour was?

  • Lydia was a very important person. What was her job?

  • Lydia went with the other women to pray. Where did they go?

  • Who did they meet there?

  • What did Paul tell Lydia that she didn’t know about?

  • How did Lydia respond to the news about Jesus?

  • Where did Lydia invite Paul and his friend Silas to go?

Lydia was a very important businesswoman. She sold purple cloth! Purple was very special at that time because the dye that was needed to make purple cloth was very expensive. In fact, it cost ten times more than gold! This is because it was made from a type of sea-shell and it was hard work to collect the shells and take the dye from them. It took over a thousand shells to dye one metre of cloth and so purple clothes were extremely expensive. A purple cloak cost the same as 9 years worth of wages in Lydia’s day! Only very rich people or those in the royal family could afford to buy them. So Lydia was considered a very important person indeed!

Paul went down to the river where people usually went to pray, and there he met Lydia. She believed in God and tried to please him but she had never heard about Jesus. In fact no-one in Lydia’s country had heard the good news yet! Paul told her all about Jesus and how He died so that she could be forgiven, become God’s friend and live with Him forever in heaven. When Lydia heard this good news, she believed it and invited Paul and Silas back to her house. The Bible tells us that Lydia’s whole family believed and were baptized to show they had decided to follow Jesus. Lydia’s family were the first people to follow Jesus in the whole of Europe and they helped to tell others about Him too! How wonderful that Paul travelled everywhere telling people about Jesus so that Lydia and many others could come to know Him! Who could you tell about Jesus today?

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that if we believe in you and become your friend, we can go to live with you forever in heaven one day. Please help us to follow you every day and to tell our friends about you too. Amen.
