Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • Which town did Mary and Joseph live in?

  • How do you think Mary felt when she saw the angel?

  • What did the angel Gabriel come to tell Mary?

  • How did the angel appear to Joseph?

Mary lived in a town in Israel called Nazareth and she was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph. One day, the angel Gabriel came to visit Mary to give her a very important message. She was going to have a baby! But this wouldn’t just be any baby, this baby would be the Son of God and the King of the whole world! Mary was confused at first but she loved God and trusted his plan for her life. When Joseph found out that Mary was pregnant, he thought she had done something wrong and wondered if he should still marry her. But when he went to bed that night, the angel Gabriel appeared to him in a dream. The angel told Joseph that this baby was from the Holy Spirit and he would become the Saviour of the world! Gabriel told Joseph not to be afraid to marry Mary as God wanted him to take her to be his wife and to stay by her side as she had this special baby. And that’s exactly what Joseph did!

God had sent his one and only Son, Jesus, into the world and had chosen Mary and Joseph to be his parents on earth. This was all a part of God’s special plan to save us and the whole world! We are going to hear more of the Christmas story next week.

Prayer: Dear Lord, Thank you for Christmas and for the amazing true story of your Son, Jesus, who came into the world. Please help us to remember the real reason why we celebrate Christmas and to share the amazing news of Jesus’ birth with others too. Amen.

This Week's Crafts: Paper Angels and Cupcake Case Angels

Paper Angels

You will need: Colouring pens or pencils, scissors, glue and a copy of the printable template.

Colour the angel and cut it out. Stick the wings behind the angel's shoulders. Stick the extra face on top of the face on the template using a rolled up ball of sellotape or blue-tack for a 3D effect. You could also decorate your angel with glitter or sequins to make it sparkly! Stick a loop of ribbon to the back of the angel's head to hang it as a Christmas decoration!

Cupcake Case Angels

You will need: Cupcake cases (any colour or pattern), glue or sellotape, scissors, paper or card, colouring pens or pencils and a pipe-cleaner (optional).

Fold a cupcake case in half and then in half again. This will become the angel's body. Using another cupcake case, do the same and then cut out two triangles to use for wings. Stick the pointed end of the wings to the top back of the cupcake case body. Cut out a small circle of paper or card and draw your angel’s face on it. Stick this to the top of the angel's body. To make a halo cut a piece of pipe-cleaner and twist it into a circle around your finger, leaving a bit extra to to make a handle that you can stick behind your angel’s head.
