The Story of Easter - The Triumphal Entry

One day, Jesus was travelling into Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. By now, lots of people had heard about Jesus and all of the amazing miracles he had done. They were very excited to see him and wanted to praise him. Let’s see what happened:

Time to Think and Pray

Questions

  • What animal did Jesus ask his disciples to get for him?

  • What did the crowd put down on the road and wave in their hands?

  • What did the crowd shout and sing to Jesus?

Jesus was travelling to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover, just as a lot of other people were doing at that time. Passover is a Jewish festival that celebrates the time when God brought Moses and God’s people, the Israelites, safely out of Egypt.

After Jesus brought Lazarus back from the dead, a lot of people believed in Him. When the religious leaders heard about this, they were angry! They were afraid that soon everyone would believe in Jesus and no-one would listen to them. So they started to plan how they might kill Jesus! They ordered that if anyone saw Jesus they had to report it so they could arrest Him.

When Jesus rode the donkey into Jerusalem, people were so excited to see him and they welcomed him just as a king would be welcomed into the city. The people took off their coats and threw them onto the ground for the donkey to walk on. They waved palm leaves and branches and they praised Jesus shouting “Hosanna!” and “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God in the highest heaven!” The Bible tells us that Jesus is the King of Kings! Jesus rode on a donkey like this to show everyone that he was their king. He did this even though he knew there were people waiting in Jerusalem to arrest and kill him.

Jesus wants to be the king of our lives too! When we love and follow him we can trust that he is in control and will take care of us. We are going to hear the next part of the true story of Easter in next week’s session.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that you are the King of Kings and want to be the king of my life too. Please help me to trust you and follow you each day. Amen.

This Week's Crafts: Palm Leaves and Peg Donkeys

Palm Leaves

You will need: Colouring pens or pencils, scissors, a straw or lolly stick, and a copy of the printable template.

Print a copy of the template, colour your leaf and cut it out. Stick a straw or lolly stick to the bottom half of the back of the leaf to make a handle. Have fun waving your leaf!

Peg Donkeys

You will need: A piece of card (eg:from a cereal packet), colouring pens or pencils, scissors, two pegs, a glue stick, googly eyes (optional), black or brown wool (optional) and a copy of the printable template.

Print the template and colour your donkey. Cut out the donkey and the leaf. Stick the donkey to a piece of card to make it stronger and cut it out again. Clip your two pegs  to the bottom of the body to give your donkey legs. Add goodly eyes or draw them on. Stick small pieces of wool to the donkey’s mane and tail or draw them in. Tape the stalk of the leaf to the back of the donkey, so you can see the words or attach the leaf to a strip of ribbon and tie it around the donkey’s neck.
